Purchasing train tickets

Can anyone advise me if it is possible to purchase train tickets in cities like Hangzhou or Shanghai for travel from Xian-Pingyao, Pingyao-Datong and Datong-Beijing, or must the tickets be purchased at point of embarkation. Thanks!

You don't have to purchase the train tickets at the point of embarkation, you can buy the tickets in other cities 10 days in advance.
