For the 12 months visa, I think there are 3 options for you:
1. working visa with a company
2. 12 months F visa
3. get marry with a Chinese, ;)

Just PM me for more details

Another option is a 12 month multi entry visa. This means your friend must exit and re-enter periodically. The period can be from one to 3 months. This works out well if you are in the deep south and can exit to Hong Kong and re-enter an hour later. The period of each visit depends on the visa issuing consulate and is often at the longer end if you use an agent. I have also met two people with a six month single entry visa but that is very very hard to come by.

If all else fails go for the longest visa you can get and get 2 new visas (often called renewals but they aren't), then head for Hong Kong to get another.
