Has anyone done this by train?
If so how did you arrange it and what did you thing of it?

You won't be able to go from Chengdu to Lhasa by train until around early 2007 (maybe later).

The best way is by air !
The airfare of economy class is 1500 CNY.

Yeah, now you can only get to tibet by air, and if you are foreigner, you have to apply a permit, normally the airline ticket to tibet including permit, transportation from where you stay to airport is around 1990-1950 rmb

Becareful with some agents if they said they can arrange tibet permit for you but you never see those permit. If this is the case, you can't travel yourself in Tibet. You must join the tour.
