my experience to learn a language!

I am a english learner.
Start from 8 years old, as a result of my education system, there is a long term learning, but a bad result, till i graduated from University. I know language doesn't learn, it should be to imitate, to say, to remember till no need to remember,familiar, communicate. as last, stay in the language environment.

So, I think learn Chinese is similar.

Am i right?
