A writer writes an article for FT Chinese concerning China’s population policy. In his article, he analyzes some problems caused by the “one child” policy:

In some areas, there are too few people and a critical shortage of workers and wives, which could threaten economic growth and social stability. You know, most Chinese people prefer to have a son instead of a daughter. Because of the birth limits, gender ratio is skewed and there is a shortage of wives. On the other hand, China faces an aging crisis with too few workers and many old people.

Due to the “one child” policy, China’s birth rate has fallen sharply. The demographers say that Shanghai has the lowest birth rate in the world. According to a survey made by Oriental Post newspaper, only 18.5 Shanghainese want more than one child.

It has been discussed heatedly on whether to change the policy for years. The insiders believe that it will soon loosen restrictions marginally in five provinces, meaning couples may bear more than one child.

Many couples decide to have one child not only because of the “one child” policy but also for some other reasons. In today’s world, raising one child is too difficult. How can they afford to raise two children to become adults?
