offcourse you need a visa,you can apply a "L" via or "F"visa or a "Z"visa,it's up to you,and how long will you stay in china?

If you plan to visit as a tourist you will just need an L visa. As all Chinee tourist visas, (all durations and number of entries) cost the same for US citizens, I suggest you apply for a multiple entry one year visa..except if you want a long period single entry visa - then you might be able to get a single entry visa for 3 months whereas the multiple entry might allow only one or two months per entry. Sorry to have to say 'might' but such details are often changed. Likewise the multiple entry might only be for 6 months...you never know until you have been granted it.
