Sub-branch office or Grandson Office?
Dec 17, 2010 14:45
guestJenny Hi there,
I have a question for the native English speakers: is there an expression "Grandson Office"? Or do you have such "Sub-branch office" in USA or European countries?

Okay, maybe I should make myself clear: I wanna express that a company that is a subsidiary of another subsidiary of a big company. What's the correct expression? I am an English learner, and meet this difficulty. I will appreciate your kind help. Thanks!

Jenny

The main company might be referred to as the "parent" company and the smaller one belonging to the parent, a subsidiary company.

GUESTJENNY Thank you, gaffer! I know there are such terms as "Parent company" and "Subsidiary". But my question is:" I wanna express that A Company that is a Subsidiary of Another subsidiary of a big company. What's the correct expression?"

In order make myself fully understood, maybe I should give you an example: If there are companies A, B, C

A is the Parent Company.
B is a subsidiary of A.
Well, C is a subsidiary of B.
Then, what's the relation between C and A? I mean what is the term to describe the relation between C and A? Shall we say " A is the "Grandparent Company", C is " grandson office" of A? Is this correct?

Good question I can't find any reference to different name for a subsidiary of a subsidiary. The definition of a subsidiary is a company whose controlling interest is held by another company. The parent company is not necessarily a larger company but it must control more than 50% of the subsidiary. I assume therefore that the sub subsidiary company is then simply a subsidiary of its parent company, which is, in itself, a subsidiary of its parent company. There does not have to be a connection between the "grandson" company and the "grandparent" company as the separate companies are "entities" or corporate bodies in their own right.

Maybe a corporate lawyer will correct me
