The plan is for me to get another tourist visa for a month and then travel around China after that. Whilst researching the process for visa extension I discovered that my failure to register at my local PSB could cause difficulties including a 5000RMB fine. The reason I didn't register is because I stupidly thought it was just a government recommendation as oppossed to necessity. I have read a lot of conflicting information on forums but it seems perhaps I might be able to stay in a hotel for one night, get a registration form from them and then apply at the PSB the day before my visa runs out. Is this at all possible and or are there any other ways in which I can extend my visa and avoid the registration fine? Thank you.

The residence registration is usually carried out at the nearest police station to where you are living and is quite detailed. It must be done within 24 hours of arrival or 48 hours in rural areas. Cities and provinces have different ways of dealing with this but in Guangzhou they take details of your entry and departure dates, copies of your passport and visas, and need a photo. In addition they need Hukou, ID card and Housebook of the person you are living with. All this information is scanned and entered onto a computer system. An interpreter is usually essential, sometimes they want your name in Chinese. At larger hotels they register on your behalf but still take copies of your passport and visas. If all this information is available when you try to extend your visa, then you may have problems with registration not matching entry dates. If it isn't available and you come up with a good story you might be fine.
