Michael Skapinker wrote an article for FT Chinese, talking about whether English will rule the world. He argue that English will be a world language no matter whether the US and Britain eclipse. But do not forget about mandarin. China is growing and many people are studying Chinese right now.

German and French were once popular but they finally collapsed. Do you think it is possible that they become popular again?

I think the most important point raised in the Article is that Chinese has characters. Unless China physically conquers the rest of the world it will be highly unlikely that many countries will adopt a character based system as the global language.
