is a visa required for an overnight layover in Guangzhou?

guest15684 Someone please please help me out. I am so frustrated and disappointed. Ok, so this is my situation:
I booked tickets from Japan to Philippines with an overnight layover in Guangzhou, China. I went on the Guangzhou airport website first to find out if there was pertinent information about needing a visa just for an overnight layover in Guangzhou. Sure enough, there was a Q&A, and one of the questions is exactly what I'm asking. The answer, according to what was probably an airport official, was that "no, you don't IF you're staying for less than 24 hours with a confirmed ticket". So we get to the airport counter in Japan after purchasing THREE tickets and they don't let us on the plane because apparently you do need one. I know that should answer my question, but I'm so angry about the answer the airport official had given because that's what I based my decision on. So, I'm just confirming if it really is required. We were supposed to arrive Guangzhou about 8pm, and leave 9am the next the day. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. And of course, I can't find that Q&A on the website I was looking at.

It's true that you don't need a [tcgurl=http://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/visa/transit.htm]China Transit Visa[/tcgurl] for one overnight stopover in [tcgurl=http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/guangdong/guangzhou/airport.htm]Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport[/tcgurl]. However, even if you have a visa to China (or maybe you do not need a visa) your airline might refuse to allow you to board. This is because airlines face penalties from governments if passengers are not eligible for entry to a country and they are also responsible for carrying them out again.
