| From the New Year’s Day 2011, south China underwent a devastating snow and icy rain disaster. The harsh weather has pummeled Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi and Chongqing, paralysing traffic and straining power networks in some areas ahead of the vast migrations of people for the [tcgurl=https://www.travelchinaguide.com/essential/holidays/spring-festival.htm]Spring Festival[/tcgurl] holiday next month. Temperatures there stayed below freezing, 3 to 5 °C lower than the average for this time of year. The icy weather and sleet have clogged highways in the past few days, especially in Guizhou and Hunan, with thousands of trucks, cars and buses paralysed by slippery conditions. Many flights from regional airports have also been delayed. On Jan. 4, traffic slowly returned to normal in Guizhou, after highways closed temporarily, leaving thousands of vehicles and people stranded. But freezing rain hit again on Jan. 5 and dangerous road conditions persist. Bad news again! More icy rain was forecast for Guizhou and some areas in Guangxi and Yunnan from Jan 9 to 13. It’s hard to say when the band weather ends. Hope it will be better before the Spring Festival and all stranded vehicles and passengers be evacuated safely and have a nice holiday. |
