Hello all I am a 24 year old graduate of anthropology and have decided to study Chinese at a university in China for perhaps the whole academic year this September. Could you recommend a good university in a dynamic city full of the arts, culture, music, nightlife, great food, interesting people. Beijing and Shanghai spring to mind. Would you recommend these cities to study and live in for a whole year? Where else would you say are great places to live for a while, taking into consideration the university, the city, my interests as well as a good base to travel from. Thank you! Shan

Beijing University would be mine first choice if I were you. In terms of culture, arts, night life, food.... you name it, beijing is definitely the best place. Besides, beijing accent is considered to be the most beautiful accent of Chinese mandarin.

Thanks for your reply. What about places such as Hangzhou, Nanjing or Chengdu? I am investigating other cities in order to not take the obvious choice. I have heard good and bad about Beijing. The bad mainly being that Beijing Normal University is not well organised and that the pollution in the city will get to you...what do you think? I know about the BBLCU but am not sure if I want to go there. Any other siggestions? Cheers

Hi, Shan! Of course Beijing and Shanghai are the best choices, but I prefer Beijing which is the center of Chinese culture, music, food, etc. What’s more, Beijing people are very warm-hearted towards people from all over the world. The pollution is not so serious as you imagine, and the living environment is becoming better and better. The transportation in Beijing is developed, you may easily go everywhere by using different means of transportation. The following universities are all very good places to study Chinese, you may investigate their websites first. http://user.nankai.edu.cn/ http://www.shisu.edu.cn/ http://www.blcu.edu.cn/ http://www.xisu.edu.cn/

It sounds like other people have the same feeling about Beijing as I have. I just love Beijing. But I would anyway make some comments on the other cities you mentioned. Hanzhou: a pretty city, only 2 hrs from Shanghai. But if you are after culture & history, there is not comparison to Beijing, and living expenses are not low. Nanjing: Not my choice of doing anything in that city. Chengdu: great lifestyle, very relaxed, has a rich Bashu culture, (have you heard Sanxingdui?) as well as great nature. It is also the starting point to explore Tibet. The food is fantastic. Living expense is low. Sichuan girls are as hot as the food. BBLCU, I am not sure what it stands for. Good luck with everything.

Thanks people for all your comments especially with the websites for those universities and the info on Chengdu. I suppose I like the idea of not living in Beijing and Shanghai because I know that I will go and explore those cities during the year. Are there any others cities that you would say I must visit whilst in China and could potentially be good to live in as well? As for BBLCU, I meant to write BLCU which is Beijing Language Cultural University. Has anyone been to Chengsa and what did they think of it?

I presume you mean Changsha in Hunan Province? I've lived there for four years. So maybe I can give you some useful tips about the city. It is not a good choice to live there if you can not bear extremely hot and cold. Temperature in summer can be up to 40 centigrade, while in winter can be frozen, without central heating system. Besides the climate, Changsha is a wonderful city in other aspect. People there are very kind, city is clean and prosperous, traffic is not heavy, and also many delicious snacks. The scenery along the Xiang River and Yuelu mountain are picturesque, especially inside the Hunan University.

Besides the language universities in Beijing , there are another three good universities to study Chinese, the links are as follow: http://english.gdufs.edu.cn/ Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou http://www.scu.org.cn/ Sichuan University in Chengdu http://www.sisu.edu.cn/ Sichuan International Studies University, in Chongqing I think the climate of the city should be considered first. Comparatively, the climate in Sichuan is more pleasant and Chengdu is indeed a good place for living. However, most Sichuanese speak Sichuan dialect so that their Mandarin accent is more or less influenced.
