i overstayed my visa the last time i was there, but i paid the 5000 RMB fee.

should i renew my u.s passport to get a better chance at obtaining a chinese visitor visa?

If there is China visa with star on your passport, you'd better apply for a new passport, the star means that you have overstay in China. Once you get a new passport, the visa officer won't notice the star, then maybe you can get a visa to return to Guangzhou, Good Luck!
