Recommendations for guide/tour in Shanghai and Beijing

guest18160	Hello! Two friends and myself (2 Brazilians and 1 American) are traveling to Shanghai for 2 nights and Beijing for 5 nights in mid-April. We want to see the normal highlights of the city, but would also like to experience "real China" and do some off-the-beaten-path sightseeing as well. We are all very adventurous and open to the culture and experiencing new things! We want to take full advantage of our time in China! A few of our friends went to China last year and attempted to tour China by themselves and said it was a disaster. They recommended that we take some tours in order to maximize our time in the city with a knowledgable guide. We are debating between private and small group tours, but don't want to be too constrained. We do not speak or read Mandarin. We are staying at the Marriot in Shanghai and the Holiday Inn Express-Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Thank you for your help!! What would you recommend? What guides/tours have you used before? How much did they cost? Is it better to take day long tours or travel alone and hire guides at the attractions?

GUEST4831	Did you come to China before? If it is your first time that you've been to China, better use a tour operator to take tours.
