| The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is probably another fire caused by fireworks. Chinese people have a long tradition setting off fireworks and firecrackers during the lunar New Year; however this causes many tragedies every year. This year there were nearly 6,000 fire incidents happened all over China during the 32 hours around the Spring Festival, killing many people. In the midnight of the Spring Festival (Feb. 3, 2011), a hotel in Shenyang was on fire due to the fireworks. Two tall buildings including the hotel and apartments are all destroyed. Ciqikou old town of Chongqing suffered on Feb. 7… Is it the time for reconsidering the limitation on setting fireworks? Limitation on fireworks had once implemented but finally abandoned because some insist that setting fireworks is a time-honored tradition of the Spring Festival and the limitation is a killer of Chinese culture and folk customs. |
