Does anyone know of a place where one can buy american size large or x-large (american size 12-14)? I need a formal cocktail dress for a formal function. Chinese women are MUCh smaller!!

You could try Guantang(官塘) and those foreign trade shops on Qixing road(七星路)and Xinghu Road(星湖路); or make it easier, go to the tailor's to tailor-make one.
