Why do Chinese want to have English names?
Apr 14, 2011 02:41
guest6684 Several days ago, I participated in my friend’s birthday party. He also invited his other friends to the party. I am not familiar with them so that we made self-introduction. I noticed that many of them had English names even though they were Chinese.

I asked my friends why they had English names after the party. He said they just wanted you to remember them because it was difficult to remember Chinese names even they were in Pinyin. This did make sense but I felt that he was kidding with me. I learned that they didn’t worked in foreign invested companies or had English friends. What’s more, most of them couldn’t speak English.

It was a bit strange to me. Why did they want English names?

Maybe they just want to be international.

GUEST2472 My GF asked me to give her an English name. She thinks that it is cool. I am not sure if there are some people who think similarly like my GF.
