I've been to China a few times before, and I've always taken travelers checks. Last year, I went to Munich and experienced the joy of using my ATM card to get cash. I was nervous that it wouldn't work, but when it did, I felt the great feeling of knowing I had access to my cash at any time. I am going to China again this year (Xian and Guangzhou). I looked up on Visa's web site and see that there are plenty of ATMs in those cities that are part of the Visa plus network. However, my fear is that I will get counterfeit money from those ATMs. Am I worrying too much? I've been slipped phony 100 RMB notes before, and I've learned how to spot them now, but getting them from the ATM--what can you do? Is this common?

Hehe, I think you are worrying too much. The bank will check the money twice before putting them into ATMs. By now, I haven't drawn fake money yet. I use the ATMs quite a lot.

Ah, okay, I feel better now. I'll take some $100 bills as emergency cash, but it's good to know I can use the ATMs as my main source for money.

$100 bills ? That's a lot. ATMs don't have that much. You'd better make an appointment with the bank in advance and take it from the counter.
