Getting to Mengda Lake is fairly easy. You can join a tour that goes out to the lake for the day or do it yourself. For a tour, you need to start in Xining. In Xining there are many travel companies that arrange tours for Mengda Lake and other places in Qinghai. One's I would recommend are Qinghai China Travel Service, CITS, and China Qinghai Tourist Corp. A day trip to the lake should cost around Y80 per person, which includes your entrance fee. If going in a group is not your style, you can do it on your own. Take abus from Xining to Xunhua. There are buses that leave for Xunhua about every 30 to 45 minutes from 7am until around 6pm. From Xunhua, you can hire a taxi to take you the hour or os to the lake. The best time to go is in the summer.
