travel from Beijing to Pingao

I will be in Beijing for a few days in June. I then wish to travel to Pingao, which presumably I will have to do by train. How long will the train journey take and can I buy the ticket after I get to Beijing. And would love any suggestions of a good hostel/hotel in Pingao.
After this I wish to go to Chengdu....will this again have to be by train? I cannot find any airport near by.

GUEST2460 It takes around 12.5 hours if you take train fom Beijing to Pingyao. How long do you plan to stay in Beijing? The train tickets are usually sold 10 days in advance. I am not sure if you can buy it on your own.

From Pingyao to Chengdu, you can take No.1485 train. It takes around 26 hours. The train starts from Taiyuan. If you want to get to Chengdu by flight, you need go to Taiyuan by train or bus. There you can take the flights.
