How much money to bring on 3 week trip to China
May 28, 2011 06:50
guest08166 I am traveling for 3 weeks soon to China and was wondering how much money I will need per week. I am traveling with a tour company and all the meals are included as are all the fees to get into attractions and show etc. We will just need money for snacks and souvenirs. Can anyone help me with how much I should bring. Thanks

It really depends if you're the kind of person who likes to buy things when they travel. I just got back from an 11 day trip to Xi'an and Guangzhou. I am a notoriously tight spender on vacations. I just never buy anything. My hotel and flights were pre-paid, so the only thing I had to worry about was food, transit costs, and admission fees. I averaged spending only about $25 a day, which is about 160 RMB.

You're on tour where everything is paid for, so the only thing you really have to worry about is how much you want to shop. Now, if you go to a high end mall, you're going to find that a lot of things there are priced the same (or even more expensive) than what you find at home (designer shirts for 500 to 600 RMB, etc).

If you go to some side shop, you'll see t-shirts for 60 to 80 RMB (I guess you can bargain it lower--I always hear that you can bargain in China, although I wouldn't know because I never buy anything). Two years ago when I was in Shanghai, I did buy a set of wooden bowls and chopsticks, and I think that was around 160 RMB--I bought a cheap set, the nicer sets were like 300 RMB and up. Let's see, a venti mocha frappuccino at Starbucks was 36 RMB.

I would say bring $300 cash with you--$100 per week. If you need more, you can always use the ATM.
