Country Description:
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor) is the youngest nation in Southeast Asia, which became independent in 2002. It occupies a total area of 15,410 square kilometres with fine beaches, colonial towns, rugged hills and lush vegetation. The capital is Dili.

Although archeological discoveries indicate that there are human remains dating back to tens of thousands of years, little is known about the country and its inhabitants before the Portuguese reached its coast in the early years of the 16th Century. Timor has many different languages and dialects because of several waves of immigration. People from South China came here thousands of year ago and they (mainly the Hakkas) are one of the important communities of trading even today.

Notes
he Embassy of Timor-Leste in China was opened in December, 2004. Travellers to Timor-Leste should obtain transit visas via Australia, Indonesia or Singapore and then apply for an on-arrival visa at Timor-Leste's Nicolau Lobato Internatal Airport dependent upon connecting air tickets.

Chinese diplomatic officials can contact the Chinese Embassy in Timor-Leste and request assistance in applying for a visa. (Others can request the inviters in Timor-Leste to apply for a visa).

If travelling with an equivalent of USD1,500 cash or more, a valid stay of 30 days is allowed and can be extended to 60 days by paying the relevant fee to the local police or immigration departments. Maximum stay duration allowed for a single journey is 90 days.

If a visa is expired when the holder leaves Timor-Leste, a fine will need to be paid prior to depature (depending on how many days expired). Departure tax is USD10. Please contact the Embassy of China if a Chinese national intends to travel to Timor-Leste.
