giving birth in china

guest02138 Does anyone know the cost of giving birth in China (Guangzhou or Changchun)? I have looked online everywhere and can find no info. We aren't worried about having an english speaking hospital as China seems to know better than any other country how to give birth. Thanks for any info that anyone can provide!!

I am not a mother but I have had friends give birth in China.

It isn't that expensive but understand that:

1) The hospital will pressure you to have a more expensive C-section up until the point that the deposit is paid and the papers are signed for a vaginal birth. The moment the papers are signed they will stop pressuring you.

2) The hospital will try to convince you to induce labor. Unless you are really really sure that there is a valid medical reason, they are probably doing this because inducing labor is another item they can add to the bill. Get second opinions from doctors who are not involved with the hospital before agreeing to induce labor.

3) If the father (or any non-female friends) wish to be present they very likely will find themselves having to fight for the privilege up to and including pushing back at nurses who are trying to physically force them to leave the room.

I was present at one birth as a translator for the father. He was a paramedic in the States and had prior experience with the whole scary bloody process. They were willing to let me in to the delivery room but shut the door in his face while he was in the middle of talking to his wife.

4) If either or both of the parents are foreign and the hospital knows this it is very likely that the hospital will tell you the newborn has a condition called Meconium Aspiration (inhaled baby poo) and needs to go to neo-natal intensive care for a few days. It is up to you to decide whether or not to let them take your baby away.

Meconium Aspiration is a statistically unlikely (albeit very dangerous) condition for newborns. Of the four recent births involving friends of mine, two different hospitals in different provinces insisted that the baby had Meconium Aspiration and needed to go to intensive care. In both cases it appears that there was -nothing- wrong with the child that a couple extra thousand renminbi on the hospital bill couldn't fix.

I haven't heard about it yet, it's a hospital. You may ask for help from those visa agencies.
