Many news reports have said that Twitter and Blackberry Messenger had a role to play in London Riots. According to the report, the death of Mark Duggan and subsequent protest were indeed organized on Facebook. Besides, some Blackberry users reported that they received some messages telling people to join the disorder.

The local police noticed this and started to monitor Twitter and Facebook after the riot occurred. But it is harder to monitor Blackberry Messenger because the text messages are all encrypted when they are sent. But the Blackberry has promised to help the police to trace those who are responsible for stirring up the riot.

The social media network has brought people closer and closer. People can have better communication with each other with the help of the social media like Facebook and Twitter. But some guys take advantage of it to do something illegal. It looks like a two edged sword.

Is social media to blame for the London riots? What do you think of it?

I don't think the social media should be blamed for the London riots. If the facebook and blackberry don't exist, they will find othere methods to spread the info. We should not ''stop eating because of a hiccup''.

The British government should have been blamed for the riots in London. The citizens are dissatisfied with what their government has done. A lot of people have lost their jobs but the government still decides to cut the expenditure in welfares. Plus, the death of Mark Duggan was just a fuse. They finally find a way to express their dissatisfaction.

The police claim that most of the rioters are criminals. Why do so many criminals appear? Whose faults? Think about it.

The victims of the London Riots require their government to deprive those rioter's welfares like low-rent houses. So far, any decision has been made.

If the government deprive those rioter's welfares, won't they live miserable lives, which may lead to more riots? That may form a vicious circle.

Reasonable analysis. The normal people suffer from the riots and they require the government to deal with those rioters. But the rioters launched the riots because they are not satisfied with their government. What the government can do to mediate the conflict? Arresting more than 1700 rioters is useless.

GUEST2796 Two facebook users in UK have been sentenced to stay in prison for 4 years because they incited the disorder and riots, the news says.

Why didn't the US government punish the Facebook?

Nonsense. Why is facebook to be punished? Facebook was taken advantage of by the rioters.

You bought a knife in a store and then killed a man. Should you blame that the knife maker and the store need to be punished too?

GUEST91745 The welfare benefit system in the uk is very generous, which is why so many foreigners want to live there. Where else in the world do you get free housing, free medical service and get paid for not working? There are no "poor people" in the UK compared to China where you have to work to earn.

It was not a case of the rioters being unhappy with what the government is trying to do to reduce its debt, but that they took advantage of a situation to loot and steal. The use of social media meant that organisers could co-ordinate attacks to make it difficult for the police to act. How else could this have been done so rapidly?

There is always a faction of "Rent-a-mob" who will turn out to cause trouble at any event whether is is a football match or a police incident.

GUEST6578 GUEST91745, are you a citizen of the UK?

"It was not a case of the rioters being unhappy with what the government is trying to do to reduce its debt, but that they took advantage of a situation to loot and steal."

Why did they loot and steal? For fun?

GUEST50251 Actually yes, that was quoted from one of the looters. Envy is the obvious answer. People stole big screen TV's, beer, Cell Phones, Laptop computers, TV games......not exactly the essentials of life. If you look at the photos you will see there is also a racial element.
