How important for a Chinese to learn calligraphy?
The importance for a Chinese to learn calligraphy is very different from today and the past.
In the past, Chinese only use brush to write, and to learn the language from his/her childhood. If you think Chinese language is difficult to learn, then I think Chinese calligraphy is more difficult- you always find some scripts in a calligraphy is so hard to recognize or read. However, I should say, writting calligraphy can help a child to learn Chinese character and language. It makes a tough work into an interesting journey.
If you travel in China and do not notic the calligraphy on the mountain, in the temple, in the museums, or in the relic market, you may not feel the feeling of Chinese people: why they did this ?
But Chinese calligraphy is very unique and stylish, it is neat and you will feel the spirit and artful beauties by feeling it.
