Help! We are going to China for a 5 week holiday in July/August then we will be living in TEDA in Tianjin for a couple of months. I though we could do lots of weekend trips from Tianjin so that covers places like Beijing.
We are travelling with our 4 year old daughter and can start our trip anywhere we like eg. Mongolia, Shanghai, Hong Kong. What do you think are our must go to destinations?

Hope to hear from many people soon.

xi'an, xi'an, xi'an. and the whole shaanxi province. it is the real history of china. think about that, you can find everywhere, unconsiously, an ancient wall, an ancient temple, or an old building with hundreds years' history...
i'm sure your daughter would love it. and it's a touristic city so shouldnt have to worry about the facilities.

BEIJING,HENAN,SHANXI changbaishan(in JILIN province) are very good. TIANJIN is very near to beijing, about 1.5 hour by train or car.I think if you want to visit all over China,START from beijing maybe more convinice.

Hi
Thanks everyone for the info. We come from Melbourne, Australia and will be living in Tianjin in TEDA for 3 months from July/Aug to Sep/Oct depending on how suitable our living arrangements are and if we can find appropriate things to do with our 4y/o every day.

July and August are the hottest two months in most cities of China, since you will take your child with you, I suggest you’d better choose some summer resorts as your travel destinations.
Yunnan is definitely your first choice, such as Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, the natural scenery there are just fabulous, and you can get more insight about Chinese ethnic culture, what’s more, the weather is pleasant even in summer.

Sichuan can also be taken into your prior considerations, Dujiangyan, Mt. Emei, Leshan Giant Buddha, Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area & Huanglong Valley, Giant Panda museum & reserve are all very hot tourist spots. Moreover, Sichuan is famous for Chuan cuisine and you may easily find various kinds of snacks in the city.

If you want to learn more about Chinese culture and history, Xi'an can not be missed, but the weather is kinda unbearable in hot summer, the best time to visit Xi'an is in May and October:)

You should also be sure to check out things to do in Tianjin. It might not be Beijing, but there's still plenty to do if you're willing to look for it. Pick up the new Lonely Planet before you head out to China, look around for the expat mag Jin, and check out my website: www.TianjinExpats.com .

It's still pretty new, but we've already got a significant amount of information available on everything from shops to sightseeing to clubs in Tianjin. We're going to continue adding information to our online guide, available here:

http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mitt0047/tianjinexpats/TianjinGuide.htm

Good luck on your journey to Tianjin. Be sure to check in if you have any questions.
