China on a Motorcycle

Hi all,

I am from India and I am planning to travel across mainland china on a motorcycle. I have read different forums and still can't find a definitive answer about the possibility of such a journey.

I read that I can get a Chinese driver's license if I have an IDP and my native driver's license at major airports over the counter.

My Original idea was to enter china through Nepal >> Tibet. But i am unsure if this would work out as the vehicles will need a temporary license plate / registration done in china to use it and a carnet de passage is not enough.

I wonder if any one has done something like this before? Or if any one know if I can get a Chinese license and vehicle permit at the border check points? Because if this can't happen, then its impossible to enter in china with my vehicle.

I read that, for cars, you need to pay close to USD 4500 and then take a government provided guide around wherever you go. Which is quite unreasonable for a motorcyclist.

What alternate options are available? can a person with a tourist visa buy a motor vehicle there? And if yes, how much would a decent motorcycle cost?

My Idea is to visit the major cities, and travel through the ancient silk road to Kyrgyzstan / Kazakhstan. or at least till the Chinese border of these countries, sell off the motorcycle if bought from china and return.

What would be the ideal route and are the roads safe for a motorcyclist? Heard that some cities does not allow motorcycles, which are they? So many questions without answers. I understand china is a vast country and its difficult to find a definite answer, but anything that helps me closer to this dream would be appreciated.

Cheers,
-Sarath
