Hi I am going abroad soon to visit family and want to take money I have saved up RMB or USD out of the country.
Could anyone tell me how much RMB can I take out the country as I am hearing various figures the amount I want to take out is about 40,000 RMB about 6000 USD.
Do I need to delcare it and what does declaring mean? It is all legit I have receipts, my work contract and pay slips to prove that it isn't funny money. I don't want to get in trouble with the law so can anyone shed some light on what I should do.
Thank you and I would appreciate some advice.

If it is RMB, you can take at most 200,000 out of China.
If it is USD, it should be USD5,000. If you'll take more than it out of China, you need a License for Carrying Foreign Exchange across the Border issued by a bank within China. Show the license to the officer at the customer and they'll let you go.

Hi I think GuestDavid is wrong you can take 20,000 RMB out of China not 200,000 RMB that is a high amount and is sure to raise eyebrows at customs.
Also having 40,000 Rmb is also too high, you should spend it before leaving China.

I know that the USA customs require you to report to them hwen you bring in more than USD 10,000 in any form.
I don't know what the limit is when you leave China.
But then again, I've never had this problem...
