"At fifteen my heart was set on learning; at thirty I stood firm; at forty I had no more doubts; at fifty I knew the mandate of heaven; at sixty my ear was obedient; at seventy I could follow my heart's desire without transgressing the norm”---A quote from Confucius

Roger Federer is at his thirties this year. According to Confucius, Roger Federer stands firm at his thirties. He has won 16 grand slams and entered the grand slam semi-finals 23 times consecutively. Plus, he has a happy family, a good wife and two lovely girls. He has succeeded in his career (playing tennis) and family.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t won any grand slam this year. This just happened in 2002. And He comes into the forth in ATP ranking. No grand slam and ranking forth have brought up a heated discussion in the media, that is, “Can Roger Federer win the grand slam after his thirties?”

Some people will say “He won nothing in 2011 and his ranking comes forth. Apparently, he is getting old. So I don’t think he will win the grand slam again”.

However, Roger doesn’t think so. He told the media that he still dreamed of winning a grand slam or the gold medal of the men’s singles at 2012 Olympic Games.

Do you think Roger Federer can fulfill his dream?

GUEST2796 It is difficult to say. I guess that Federer's wish is to win the gold medal of men's singles at 2012 London Olympics. The grand slam is less attractive to him. But it is hard to fulfill his dream.

To win a gold medal at the Olympic Games is his wish. But I guess that he won't give up fighting for the grand slams though it is difficult for him to win.

I'm not sure why you said the slam is less attractive to him?
Has he said this publicly? Somehow I don't think that he has.

That's a good summary Kevin.
Although I would love to see Roger win another slam, I think it is unlikely, unless he gets some luck with the draw.

He would need one or two of the top four to lose prior to the semi's in order to win.

Also don't forget that he will need to work harder now just to get past the lower ranked players. The Berdych's, the Fishes, the Del Potro's, the Tsonga's etc. will all pose greater risks
than ever before, especially with their new found confidence against Roger.

I see, 2012 as the 'make or break' year for Roger.
I predict that if he doesn't win a slam, he will retire at the end of the year.

If he doesn't make the finals of the slams in 2012, he will become more doubtful of his game.
Don't forget that there will be/are new tennis players two full 'tennis generations' younger than he is now. A generation being five years.
It will be difficult to keep up with these players, on the sheer physical level.

Canadaguy, I am quite in agreement with what you said. Roger Federer said that he had planned for his retirement four years ago and knew clearly what he was going to do after retirement.

Maybe I am too sensitive. I feel that Roger might retire soon. 2012 is very important to him. If he failed at the 2012 London Olympics and didn't win any grandslam, he would retire at the end of the year.

Like you said, new potential tennis players will come up but Roger Federer will be getting old. It is difficult to compete with those young and energetic players.
