guestRaymond Hello everyone! I am an American and no I won't be teaching English, So I've been reading this forum lately, since i have been interested in a job in China, which i actually found, and honestly I was even excited to hear back from the company with a job offer for me, they have offered me a position in Shanghai with a monthly salary of RMB 4000.00 For what I've read all around this is not enough to live in Shanghai, not even on a budget, they won't help with lodging or anything else, just the salary... I think is not worthy.. It's my opinion from what I've read from many of you here, I just want to know if I am wrong! Thanks..

GUEST65114 That salary is not bad for a Chinese worker. It is unusual for a foreigner to be offered a job unless he/she has a "special skill". Is this company registered to employ foreigners? Are they offering you a Z visa? If the answer to either of these is no, the job is illegal.

If you have read the posts on this forum you will know the requirements for working legally in China.

GUEST19377 Hi there,
I need some advise. My boyfriend and I both have doctorates and have taught at the university level as well as taught private English lessons in the US. We want to come to China and teach. I am 61 and my bf is 60 but we are YOUNG physically and mentally. I have one recruiter hot on my trail but he is trying to get me to come to a place called Hanan in February. He is telling me that I need to come NOW as this is the only employer who will take us at our age. Is this true? Any advise on how to go about getting jobs for June and on? Thanks, Chula

GUEST19377,
My oral English teacher in college was an 65 years old Australian. She preferred us to call her grandma. It's ok for you to be English teacher. But you'd better get the TESOL certificate to apply for a formal English teaching position.

GUEST31188 China is experiencing a huge English tearcher shortage right now, as the demand for teacher outgrows the supply.

It used to be true about the age discrimination. I don't know if they have relaxed on the age issue in recent years, because of the shortage.

Your recruiter is applying some pressure on you, which is OK if you don't mind teaching in Henan province. Make sure that the school/university offeres you a z visa, a contract and other arrangements, allowances and benefits.

Do some reading on this topic before jumping in on the first job offer you get.
