According to BBC, British people are less willing than ever to pay higher taxes to support the National Health Service. Why?

The 28th annual British Social Attitudes report indicates that more and more people blame poverty on ‘laziness’. 54% of the participants believe that social security benefits were too high and discouraged people from finding jobs. Also 63% believed parents who “don’t want to work” were to blame for their kids living in poverty.

Do you believe that high social welfare makes people lazy and live in poverty?

GUEST65114 You don't define "poverty". What the UK call poverty would be luxury in many countries including China. The way the benefit system is structured is seriously flawed and encourages people not to work.

So the British people are not satisfied with their lives and want too much?

It hurts when you pluck the feather from the cock. Similarly, the UK people feel hurt when the government 'infringes' their benefits.

GUEST31188 It's true that dependency like welfare (or other social programs) promotes laziness. The problem here is the fraud and the abuse, which ruins it for the truly needy, for whom these programs were intended. The tax payers (middle class) are fed up by the government's inability to clean up the system.

Generation after generation, people have become so dependent, that reform seems impossible.

In the USA, more than 53% of the population is receiving some sort of aid. The way things are going, this number will grow.

Generation after generatio...

The fraud and the abuse are hard to be gotten rid of. “Man's nature at birth is good”, Mencius said. I don’t believe it. Another philosopher Xunzi holds the different view. He thought “Man’s nature at birth is bad”. People are selfish. That’s why fraud and the abuse happen a lot in the governments.
