The US congress is considering of passing Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act. If the laws were put into action, the Justice Department and content owners would be allowed to seek court orders requiring search engines to block results associated with piracy.

The Wiki protested at the SOPA by shutting itself down for a day. A political statement on Wiki English site titled “Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge” showed its dissatisfaction. Google also joined the protest. It blacked out its logo and linked to an online petition urging the Congress not to censor the web.

Wiki and Google will be the victims if the laws were passed. Thus, they protested at the SOPA.

Well, Twiiter didn’t join the protest. Twitter’s chief executive tweeted “that’s just silly. Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish”.

I am a netizen and I use Google and Wiki frequently to seek useful information. The new legislation seems to deprive the netizen’s rights to seek free knowledge on the internet. That’s bad.

What about you? Do you think it is really necessary to pass the SOPA and PIPA?

I appreciate the laws' idea to combat piracy. But some of the rules are ridiculous. The copyright owner can require the search engines and websites to shield and withdraw pirate contents. They can even ask the ISP to shut down the search engines and websites.

Really absurd! Look! Do you think you can require to shut down the Wal-mart if you were stolen at the Walmart?
