Am begining organised tour for 17 days from Hong Kong to Beijing in May. Am hoping to stay for another week in Beijing after tour is finished, am looking at accommodation in Xicheng or Chao Yang districts. Can anyone assist as to which of these districts would be closer to markets, transport etc or whether any other districts would be more centrally located?

Every district has all sorts of markets, and good transportation.

Xicheng is more central, while Chaoyang is very large, covers a bit part of east Beijing.

Depending on what you do in Beijing, Xicheng, Dongcheng, Chongwen, Haidian, Chaoyang ... are all good.

I am going to Beijing in June, and will be staying in Chongwenmen where has a subway station, close to the pearl market & the temple of heaven, close to the Pianyifang Roast duck restaurant, close to the railway station, close to Qianmen & Tiananmen. But would miss the night life a bit which happens more in Chaoyang district.
