Chengdu is located in southwest China, which is one of the most6 birdiverse regions in the world. this region is home to more than 80% of the 1.600 wild giant pandas in China. Four Giant panda nature reserves have been set up within a stone's throw from the city. At only 70km from core giant panda habitat, Chengdu is the nearest metropolitian city in China to giant pandas. This means that giant pandas could actually be living on the outskirts of Chengdu, giving Chengdu the distinction of being the only city in the world to have captive and wild giant pandas.

six giant pandas were selected from the Chengdu Panda Base to be the first to move to the Field Research Center. The pandas are 2-4 years old, active and healthy, with a strong potential for viability and enviromental adapatability.

Since the 1980's, there have been 10 attempts at reintroducing giant pandas into the wild. All of the giant pandas reintroduced had lost their wild survival skills while they were in captivity.Xiangxiang was a tragic example, after less than one year post release into the wild, he died. His death caused the giant panda reintroduction debate to become heated.

Panda Valley which now is underconstruction is a paradise for giant pandas, it will be divided into three phases: the panda adaptation area, the giant pada wild skills experimental area and the giant panda reintroduction experimental area. Wild giant panda research and observation stations will be built there, the purpose is to enable reserachers to monitor giant pandas in the field. These giant pandas will be released into the mountain forests. They are encouraged to live as wild as possible until they have the necessary skills to allow them to live out in the wild.

60 years ago, on the verge of starvation, their ancestors were recued by human beings, 60 years later, their descentants will return. Though the road may be long, they have walked through the starting gate.

GUEST19874 Although very cute I'm afraid Pandas are their own worst enemy. They have a very limited diet and owing to its lack of nutrition they need vast amounts of bamboo each day. Not only have they lost their skills to live in the wild, they are not very good at procreating. Females are receptive only once a year and then only for about 3 days. Not surprising that the males forgot how to do it. Artificial insemination seems to be the only way.
