Last weekend, I spent almost two hours watching a documentary made by BBC. It’s called ‘The Chinese Are Coming’. This documentary makes me think a lot. It seems that Chinese people are not welcome in some areas. Have you watched it? What do you think of Chinese people?

GUEST19874 Jimmy,
China needs important minerals for its factories that are found in relatively poor and under developed countries. However, they are paying for this by providing money and arms to the countries leaders who are using them to suppress the locals. The government are living in luxury while the people are poor. Also China is exporting workers to these countries instead of employing local people. The impression given is that China is not helping the countries only the often corrupt governments.

The fact that they are also building a giant naval base in one of these countries is also worrying to the west.

Yes, the US feels being threatened. That's why they increase their navals in pacific area.

I've watched the series, and I have to say the undertone was pretty clear, provocative without getting itself into trouble so to speak. Except for the African part, the documentary didn't go much into the "other side of things". The side where China's influence have had a positive impact on the locals. Perhaps they thought the other side of things is too obvious to mention (things being cheap and all), but viewers can take a different message from it if you just briefly describe it with one single line and spend 90 minutes on the "bad".

It doesn't help that I was watching Yuanmingyuan right before this documentary --- I can't help but think: isn't the west that kicked open Chinese doors (with force) in the first place? They spent a whole century adjusting, and now they're playing by "the rule" and getting good at it (maybe TOO good), suddenly we find ourselves fearing the very idea (capitalism) that we were so eager to install upon them... Not that I don't see China as a potential threat to the global economy and even politics, but I mean surely I can't be the only person feeling this sarcasm?

And I just have to throw this out there: what did we expect anyways. Let's just be cautious, but be open --- They dominated for thousands of years yet they've adjusted, we've dominated for a few decades and why can't we adjust our mentality? A competition rose up, well instead of pointing fingers, rise up to the challenge and step up the game in a healthy competition is obviously a better answer.

Why are we so afraid of Chinese people? Yes, we invest in Africa and make fortune but we we don't get the fortune for free. The investment should bring us profits. In fact, it's not only China that invest in the Africa. Why does China become the focus? What about other nations?
