China the destination

Have now decided to make China my choice for 2013 and have started exploring the
hostel situ and find price,s are relatively inexpensive so using HI Beijing as
example 660 CNY [$15 AUS$$$$] What standard can i expect as HI Beijing one of
the costlier options--some around $7/$8 US on Hostel World and other such sites
What are train fares like say Beijing/Xian for example
Love some advise thanks
