Hi All-
My husband and I fly in to Rome on Friday the 12th (October) at 10:00 AM and depart Venice on Monday the 22nd at 7:45 AM. We are planning on staying a couple of days in Rome and then renting a car and making our way to Venice. Where should we stop along the way?? We want to see as much history and countryside as possible!! How many days should we allot for Venice? Also, how much is gas usually at this time of year? We live in So. Cal. so are used to exorbitant gas prices, although I am sure they are nothing compared to Europe.
Thank you!!

You have a total of 10 days.

3 days Rome/4 days Tuscany/Umbria/countryside (+Florence)/3 days Venice?

You can expect to pay somewhere around 1.40 euro *per litre* of petrol, if not more. You can also expect to pay for parking (not cheap) and, you need to avoid the historical centres of many towns and cities because of the restricted traffic zones (ZTLs) with their CCTV and automatic fines.

Because you are new so i will suggest you try a Rudy's Touring Service and shore excursions to Rome.

With a generous budget a car gives you a lot of flexibility for visiting the countryside. http://www.rome-car-tours.com/
