Finding work in Fushun: ESL, music, cost of living.
Sep 22, 2012 19:15
I am Canadian from Toronto. I have a friend in Fushun and I was thinking of working there for a year or so. I didn't finish my undergraduate degree (taking classes part time) but I am university certified with a solid background in applied linguistics and teaching methodology. I am also a professional guitarist, writer, producer and I've done dramatic and documentary film-scores, jingles, and live concerts. I am 64 years young. Most people guess I am in my forties. I am sociable, energetic and adventurous. Does anyone have any information about this kind of work in Fushun. What is the cost of living? Thanks in advance. Dave

GUEST13226 To work legally in China you must be offered a job by a company or organisation registered to employ foreigners. You will then be offered a Z visa which should be replaced by work and residence permits within 30 days. You cannot work legally on any other kind of visa.

To qualify for such a position you need to have a skill which a Chinese worker cannot provide. Obviously this is very limiting but native English teaching would qualify. (possibly musician but I have no experience in this field)

You need a bachelors degree (minimum)
A TEFL or equivalent qualification
Usually two years teaching experience
and usually below 55 years of age (preferably younger)

Lower qualifications might be acceptable in less desirable locations or establishments. The more prestigious the establishment, the higher the qualifications demanded.

Beware of unscrupulous agencies who are more interested in their commission than your well being. Your contract is usually in Chinese with English translation, they are not always the same. You may find you have signed up for more (or less) than you bargained for..... and they will be conspicuous by their absence if you have problems.

Do not arrive in China on an F or L visa with a promise of a Z visa later. It wont happen! Some private schools have bad memories.... and probably no Government permit.

GUEST55242 Just getting back to this site after an absence. Thank you for the information -- It's straight ahead and clear. I don't think I will be able to land work because of my age, even though my qualifications are good. The only hope I have is specializing in international business pronunciation etc. I am going to take a vacation for a couple of weeks, late October ... landing in Shenyang, anchoring in Fushun and then fanning out. I will come back to Canada with an education, no doubt. dcb
