how can i live on a low budget for six months?

hey i'm going to shanghai to do voluntary work in august but only 4 and a half months of that is voluntary and i'm allowed 6 weeks travelling at the end.....so i'm wondering if any1 has any tips for me because i'm only a student and don't expect i'll have very much money to spend but i want to see things like the great wall, terracotta soldiers ect......so if any1 can halp i'll be extremely grateful

well let's see.
1. Accomodation: almost every city which worth visiting has Youth Hostel. Extremly for budget travel. you can easily find them on their site www.IYHF.org.
2.comunication:take trains and buses.Arrange before hand so that you could save your accomodation cost by taking a train:)
3.Dine: Choose the local vendor. CHeap and they are truly local snacks.
