Hi, I'm due to go to chongqing in June for a month to do bit of studying over there.

I was just wondering how much I should budget for my living expenses while over there?

I have never been to china before, so I really have no idea how much I should be be budgeting for

Thans heaps!

Hi Kim,

where are you from? Would be much easier to compare prices....
But Chongqing is quite affordable. You can eat in street kitchens for 2 or 3 Kuai which is less than 30 Euro Cents (dont be afraid it is the best food;), you can stay in Hostel dorms for about 50 Kuai or take a double room in a hotel starting from 100 (cheap hostel offering is rare compared to the size of this city), but since you study I guess you get a room in your college.
Public Bus transportation costs around one or two Kuai, Cable Car over the ChangJiang is one Kuai as far as I remember. Bus to or from the Airport is 15 Kuai.

1EUR is 11 Kuai, 1USD is 8 Kuai.

Where do you study in CQ - at Nanfang Translators College?

Hi there!
thanks so much for your reply!

I'm from Australia. and I'll be staying at the Southwest Eye hospital.
They are offering free accommodation so I just need to budget for food, shopping and tour costs.
I'll also be doing a tour to beijing and perhaps beijing for about 2 weeks. So i'll be in china for total of 6 weeks.

So if i budget for around 6000RMB do u think that should be plenty for the 6 weeks??

Thanks again for helping me out.
I really appreciate it!!

Hi Kim,

Im not sure of your tour costs. But normally that should do it, especially because you stay in one place most of the time (and you have to work - not only running around;) and just visit Beijing - plus you are free of accomodation costs.
Living costs are about one tenth of European costs. I remember one trip, travelling around in China for nearly 6000km including travelling and accomodation costs, food and little shopping for 4 weeks it was around 5000 Kuai - without missing the fun. If you organize your Beijing trip by yourself it should work out.
Except you go crazy on shopping - and this can easily happen in China;)

Of course for a worse case scenario you should always have the possibility to get some more money from ATMs or by traveller cheques - I dont have to mention this, I guess.
