I had my belongings and passport stolen whilst abroad on holiday. I live and work in China, so i have a residency permit and a work visa. I got back into China on an emergency travel document. The Chinese embassy issued me with a one month tourist visa in this temporary passport and told me to sort out my problem on my return to China. I am unsure if when the passport is stolen, the existing work visa and residency permit will remain and then can be re issued into the new passport when I receive it , or if these are ripped up, in which case only the 30 day tourist visa is valid. My company made some phone calls and have told me not to worry and that the work visa remains and said I do not need to go to the police station or anything but I am a little worried because if they are not correct it is me who will face the consequences if I overstay on a tourist visa , not them and it is obviously convenient for them if I am not having to leave (on another new emergency travel document)after thirty days then apply for yet another ETD in hong kong to return (because you can only travel once on an ETD). That would be a real hassle but I don't really want to get in trouble with the Chinese authorities as I quite like working here. It will take more than thirty days for the passport to be delivered here which is my problem because the visa is only this long (I applied for 3 months but the lady at the embassy changed it to 1 month). I have exhausted all other sources but not found any answers on this yet, so I thought I'd see if anyone on here has any advice or information on this although I guess it's a little unusual. Any help would be much appreciated.

GUESTJENNY BENBOW,

Once you get the new passport, you should ask your employer to help you regain the resident permit. Don't worry! You can extend your L visa before it expires. Thus, you won't overstay in China.
