What would be the best way to do this? So far it seems that flying from Beijing to Chengdu and then going overland would be easiest, though it would be nice if I could fly straight to Lhasa. I have also read that there are direct flights from Lhasa to Hong Kong. Is this so? How much are they, and how often do they fly?

Sorry for all the questions.

So far as i know, there was such route before, but now the flight of Lhasa/ Hong Kong is not available. You may only transfer in chengdu.

Are flights available from Chengdu to Hong Kong? If so, my best bet for the money would be to go overland from Lhasa to Chengdu and then fly out don't you think?

I don't think fly to Chengdu and then travel overland into Tibet is a good idea. The Sichuan-Tibet road is not in good condition and it will be a rather exhausting and long-time journey.

So why not fly to Lhasa directly from Beijing, then fly out to Guangzhou, which is close to Hong Kong, then 2 hours train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong.

I've been confused as to whether or not I could fly directly to Lhasa. Obviously that is preferrable. Any idea what a ticket will cost?

Do you think I would miss any sights on the overland journey that would be worth seeing though, or is it just so long a trip as to make it not worth the sights?

Well, travelling from Chengdu by bus was also an alternative for me. But it is supposed to be a 3287km ride for more than three days - without anything of special interest inbetween....so I took the plane, couldnt waste so much time;)

You did not say anything about your complete travel tour, but if you have no plans for travelling in southern China, than maybe you should take the plane from Beijing.
Chengdu Lhasa is between 1000 and 1200 Kuai normally. No clue about Beijing, maybe additional 1000-1200 Kuai? But it is certainly possible from Beijing.
Plus you may need a permission, they never asked me for it but I had one.
For your return you come across Chengdu anyway and from there you can fly to Hong Kong.

Airfare of Beijing / Lhasa is 2480 Yuan, and Lhasa/ Chengdu 1550 Yuan, 2550 for Lhasa to Guangzhou.
