I have been studying Spanish at the local university. I understand how to address a Spanish teacher in Spanish. For example, I would address my current teacher (even though I am older than she is and we are on kind of friendly terms) as "la doctora". I have decided to have a little fun in the fall and have registered for a Chinese language class. I understand that "loashi" (sorry, I do not know how to type the tone marks) is a very respectful way to address a teacher or mentor. Is this an appropriate way to address a teacher who is younger than yourself?

Yes, the age doesn't matter because he/she is a teacher. However, Laosi doesn't refer to teachers in school anymore. In some industries, taking wedding photo studios for example, the young workers address those photographers as Lao Shi in order to show their respect.
