Convert L visa to Z visa in Beijing, as a Canadian?

guest65230 Hi,

This forum is a great place for people needing help.
I will work for a public university in Beijing. I'm currently on multiple entry L visa.
1. Is it possible to convert the L visa to Z visa, without leaving Beijing, and without any agency help? I want to keep all the documents myself.
2. Is it still possible to convert the L visa to Z visa in Hong Kong?
The flight back to Canada is quite expensive. Thanks a lot.

GUEST20101 A Z visa (or the means to get one) is provided be an employer, an establishment registered with the government to employ foreigners. They must offer you a job and then you apply for the visa from outside of China. (Usually your own country). There are strict rules on who can be employed. Generally you need to be able to provide a "special skill" which cannot be provided by a Chinese worker. Beware of agencies who offer to provide you with the Z visa (for a price) or employers who suggest you enter China with any other kind of visa initially.

1) No
2) Sometimes - depends on the visa officer handling your application
