Hello new friends.

My wife and I will tarvel to China in early June with our 13 year old boy and girl.(Yes, twins.....). I know it will be hot, but this is the only time we can travel this year. We tarvel as a family to many places around the world and look forward to spending 12 days in Bejing, Xian, etc.

I welcome some advice on what is critical to do out of Beijing given the short time we have. Is it wise to stay in Beijing and use it as the base to visit the region? I assume a visit to Xian is a must. Is it? How would you spend 10 days in China? What is the best way to get to Honk Kong for a few days? What is the best way to meet people who speak English and are interested in meeting a family from Chicago?

Thanks in advance.

Alon

yeah Xian is definitely a must.

If you have only 10 days in China, I suggest you include Beijing,Xian and Hong Kong into your itinerary. 4 days in Beijing, 3 in Xian and 3 in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a paradise for shopping, and not many scenic spots there. I suggest Hong Kong just because it can be your exit city for your homeward flight.

I'm not sure if you have 12 or 10 days in China. If it is 12 days, I'll recommend two highlight China travel itinerary for you:

Choice one will be Beijing -Xian- Chongqing -Yangtze River Cruise-Yichang - Shanghai

Choice two will be Beijing -Xian- Guilin-Shanghai(or Hong Kong)

Thanks. I think we will skip the HK shoping....

Might you know of an English speaking student who can guide us while in Beijing or Xian? No need to be a history teacher, just someone who knows a bit about their wonderful culture. A few days in the period of July 1-10. I think my 13 year old kids would like to be guided by a person closer to their age.

Thanks. Alon

Hi Alon:
It is fantastic to know that you will come to china to look around.
acctually speaking,12 days is short for such a vast country, but anyway you still can know a lot about our country.
You can fly into Beijing, and do the forbidden city, wall, summer palace, etc.,about two days and then fly to xian or take overnight soft sleeper there. Then you can fly to Chongqing and do the yangtze cruise. And when you finish the river cruise, you can fly to hongkong, anyway hongkong is a shopping paradise. The food and some entertainment park will attract your kids,i believe.
In China, you can go to sichuan for the giant panda resort,or you can go to shanghai area,to touch the flavor of watertown and suzhou garden.Or it is also a hot spot, guilin, the hill and water is called the first under heaven.
Lots of stuff to do,depends on your interests!

It is hot but I feel there are not many people traveling during July and August. China’s uniqueness lies in its over 5,000 years of history. So historic cities are worth visiting. Just as you said, Xi’an is a must. And Kaifeng and Luoyang in Henan province, Datong in Shanxi province.

We recently returned from a 2-week trip to China. It was fantastic.

Do not short-change Beijing! There is so much to do and see there - you won't get bored. Be careful about choosing your Tour Guide - make sure it's someone legitimate (especially so-called "students"). If you need a van driver - I know one who is excellent. Very reliable, speaks English, and drives an air-conditioned newer Toyota Van. My sister lives in China and recommended him. He charges $50 for an 8 hour day. We used him several days including, a trip to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs one day. My sister also has a tour-guide she recommends (used when my parents visited last year), but we didn't use him because we were able to do it on-our-own.

Aside from shopping, not much else in Hong Kong. Shanghai is also a huge city, more of a commercial/business area - but still with interesting things to do/see, with nice areas only a couple of hours away. But Beijing has more culture and history to offer.

You'll have a great time. Good luck.

I believe I just replied to you in another forum..oh well...the same things still go. If I were you I would only go to Xian for two days leaving you more time for Beijing and HK if you wish. Its true what others have said about not short changing Beijing. It might not have the pazazz that Shanghai has, but it does have so many places to visit and great places to pick up a bargain or two and of course to relax with your family. 13 years old can be somewhat tiresome if theres no fun around and only walking looking at tourist sites is not the best of fun I agree..but there are plenty of activities for younger people to do in Beijing and definitely HK, which still very much as the British feel to it. I went to HK last Dec (my 5th visit) but this time went out to the various islands..getting away from the mainland was wonderful..so relaxing, peaceful, beaches galore..really wonderful..and then when youve had enough you jump onto the ferry and get back to the mayhem that is HK!!!Its so much fun!
I am running various sightseeing trips around Beijing at the moment designed for the individual need, so if you are interested in me showing you around, please send me an email....I really look forward to hearing from you.
