I come up with this question for the phenomenon that many Chinese girls have been married with foreigners. I don’t if Chinese girl bring their foreign husbands to visit her relatives on some important occasions. If they do, how can they make sure that their husbands address all the relatives correctly?

Don’t worry. Here is a map for you to figure the relationship.

In the center of the map is You and your wife.

To you and your wife:

侄女:daughter of your elder or younger brother
儿媳妇:your son’s wife.
女婿:your daughter’s husband (son-in-law)
外甥:son of your elder or younger sister

孙女:your son’s daughter
外孙:your daughter’s son
外孙女:your daughter’ daughter

舅舅:your mother’s brother
舅妈:wife of your mother’s brother
If your mother has two brothers (elder and younger brothers):

姨妈:your mother’s sister
姨丈 or 姨夫:husband of your mother’s sister

祖父 or 爷爷:your father’s father
祖母 or 奶奶:your father’s mother

Thanks to the one-child policy, Chinese people will have fewer and fewer relatives in the future.
