A tricycle driver drove a man back home and noticed that the passenger left a huge black bag on his tricycle. He opened the bag and saw a large quantity of money. He was shocked but finally drove away. When he returned home, he counted the money. It was 400000 RMB. Then he locked the money in his wardrobe and went out for dinner. Afterwards, he came back and watched TV till 11:00 pm. That night he passed a wakeful night.

Next day, he learnt from other tricycle drivers that the owner was looking for the money. He was afraid that the police might find him. Therefore, he threw away his helmet, changed the color of his tricycle and never wore his white trousers again. In the following days, he read the newspapers to learn about whether the owner kept looking for the money. Until October 10, he decided to return the money after talking with his sister via the phone. His sister told him “it was up to you.”

Another reason he decided to return the money is that the owner promised to give 100000 RMB to the one who got the money as reward. Also the lawyer analyzes that he needn’t be punished for keeping the money for so long.

Eventually, he returned the money to the owner and received 100000 RMB in witness of the reporter.

PS: According to the tricycle driver, his wife does farm work at home and his son studies in the fourth grade in the primary school in his hometown. He also has around 100000 RMB external debt. So he left his hometown and drove tricycle in Wuhan to make money. He just earns 2000 to 3000 RMB per month. He once planned to clear his debt with the money he got. However, the owner promised to give him 100000 RMB as reward. Therefore, he decided to return the money.

I don’t know whether he told the truth about his family. If so, the reward really solves his problem. If not, he told a lie to make the public believe he didn’t return the money for the reward intentionally. Why did he ask the reporter as the witness? Was he afraid that the owner didn’t give him the reward? If so, he was really a smart guy.

I just have a question “Would he return the lost money if the owner didn’t fulfill his promise to pay him 100000 RMB as reward?”
