Construction of the Weiyang Palace started from 200 BC and basically finished after Emperor Liu Ying ascended the throne after Emperor Liu Bang (the founder of the Han Dynasty) died. Since then, the palace had become the dwelling and the office of the emperors of the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC to 9 AD). The city wall was also built around the palace from 194 BC to 190 BC. The whole Weiyang Palace covers around 5 square meters, which is nearly 7 times as big as the Forbidden City. The main buildings of the palace are divided into the front hall, the middle hall and the rear hall. As the main hall of the Weiyang Palace, the middle hall is a place where the emperors ascended to the throne and met his subjects. Besides, royal weddings and funerals were also held in the middle hall. Today, only the front hall site has been discovered. It just becomes 350 meters long and 200 meters wide ruins after 2000 years. Except for the front hall, you can visit Jiaofang Hall, Tianlu Pavilion, Shiqu Pavilion, Site of the Ministry of Works, Site of Xian Gate, and Shaofu Site. Jiaofang Hall is the queen’s dwelling. Tianlu Pavilion is the national library while Shiqu Pavilion is national archives. Xian Gate one of the three gates of the Han City Wall. Shaofu is a financial department that manages the emperor’s money (taxes on the birds, fish, shrimps, fowls, and other animals and plants gained from the lakes, mountains, pools and swamps). During the Western Han dynasty, land rents and poll taxes on the civilians are parts of the national revenue while the birds, fish, shrimps, fowls, and other animals and plants gained from the lakes, mountains, pools and swamps belong to the emperors.
