| Kimchi (fermented vegetables made by South Koreans) is a national dish in South Korea. It’s said that Kimchi will be included in the World Heritage List this December. In order to distinguish Kimchi from Chinese and Japanese preserved vegetables, Kimchi will have a new Chinese name “辛奇”. What a strange name! I understand that it is translated according to its pronunciation. But it has no actually meaning in Chinese language. Personally, I think 泡菜 is better. We all know what it is. If South Korea wants to make kimchi different from other preserved vegetables, it just needs to add “韩国” in front of 泡菜. I am sure that all Chinese will distinguish it from 中国泡菜. |
