It’s one of the oldest traditions that Chinese people set off fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate Chinese New Year. I am the one who sets off firecrackers when Chinese New Year comes. In my village, we set off firecrackers at 00:00 on the first day of Chinese New Year. At that moment, you will hear deafening noise of firecrackers. It just reminds that Chinese New Year has arrived.

Unfortunately, some cities have decided to prohibit firecrackers and fireworks for the sake of air quality. Hangzhou and some other cities regulate that fireworks and firecrackers can only be set off on New Year’s Eve, January 1 and 15 on Chinese lunar calendar. The officials are worried that the air quality will become worse and worse if they do nothing to control the firecrackers and fireworks.

I can’t imagine what Chinese New Year will look like if fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited. Do we really need to ban fireworks and firecrackers? Is there anything that we can do to improve air quality?

GUEST92131 Look kevin0518, China has to start dingo something about air quality, and start soon. Reducing, not eliminating, firecrackers is only one measure of many to achieve that.

A few others:
-burning coal
-industrial pollution
-vehicular pollution
-trash burning
-forest fires

If China doesn't act, hospitals will be filled with folks who can't breathe.
